History and curiosities
The Origin Of Vernaccia Is Rather Uncertain. It Probably Takes Its Name From The Latin “Vernaculum” (which Means Local, Of The Place). This Wine Has Its Roots In Very Distant Times, As Demonstrated By Various Historical And Official Documents, And Literary Works. The Beginning Of Its Production Is Placed Around 1200, By The Hand Of A Certain Vieri De’ Bardi And His Sons.
The First Official Documents Dates Back To 1276 And Demonstrate How The Trade Of This Wine Was Already Flourishing And Profitable: A Tax Was Obliged To Be Paid For Each Soma Of Vernaccia Exported Outside The Municipality.
By The End Of The 13th Century, Vernaccia Was Already A Fine Wine, Present On The Tables Of The Nobles Of The Time. It Is Known That Two Centuries Later, Lorenzo Dei Medici (known As The Magnificent), Appreciated This Wine So Much That He Continuously Wrote To The Municipality Of San Gimignano Requesting This Wine! So, In 2023, We’re Still Drinking Lorenzo Dei Medici’s Favourite Wine!
It Is Fascinating To Know That This Wine Is Also Mentioned In Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The Poet, Wandering Among The Gourmands Of Purgatory, Meets Pope Martin IV, Guilty Of Having Been Won Too Often By The Desire Of Vernaccia!
